1908 The Savage

This 1908 piece entitled, The Savage, is one of Remington most favored castings. This study of physiognomy is indicative of Remington common idea of the red man. This sculpture shows both Remington’s man with the “bark on” and the Indian’s inherent pride and determination.

The deep set, enigmatic eyes and bitterly upturned lips and snarling mouth all suggest the qualities of what Remington knew as that of a savage. This casting only stands approximately eleven inches tall. Therefore, the fierce emotion and life must come from within the sculpting of this bronze. This pieces size, simplicity and power made this one of Remington most popular pieces ever. There were over one hundred castings produced in all.
